What is RTA Restoration?

RTA Restoration was born from an idea - to restore natural ecosystems at scale, make ecological restoration economically viable, and create opportunity and growth in the UK conservation industry.

Under this shared mission to make real, positive change to UK conservation, we are a group of professionals bringing together a wealth of experience and expertise in ecology and conservation, as well as economics, sales and media.

In 2023 we incorporated the company and sought to buy â€‹our first project site to restore. In early 2024, RTA Restoration successfully purchased Colwell Wood in Northumberland. Our plan is to restore the forest to a natural community of native trees, shrubs and ground flora. We will use a range of survey techniques to inform our management plan, and report on success and progress over time.

We are hugely excited to begin this journey, learn more about Colwell Wood on the Projects page.

The RTA Restoration Team

We are a team of professionals, all conservationists at heart, and with a shared dedication to reversing the catastrophic declines in global biodiversity. We bring together a wealth of expertise and experience in land management, ecology and conservation, as well as economics, sales, and media. Learn more about us on The Team page.

We have come together under our shared mission for nature restoration, to make real, positive change to UK conservation. In this way, we own the land we manage, develop bespoke management plans to restore natural habitats and go above and beyond to survey and monitor our progress and guide long-term management.

Through restoring natural ecosystems, we are supporting the regeneration of ecosystem services, from pollination to clean water. To fund our work, we secure investment in these ecosystem services, for example by selling biodiversity units through the Biodiversity Net Gain framework.

Investing in Nature

The importance of nature to society has long been under appreciated, leading to a conservation industry reliant upon charity and philanthropy. While this model has been essential in preventing complete biodiversity collapse, to reverse continual biodiversity declines we must integrate nature into our economic frameworks.

Healthy, functional ecosystems provide services such as clean air and water, flood and drought mitigation, timber and food production: processes essential for human industry and society.

As a business, RTA Restoration is providing healthy, biodiverse ecosystems as fungible commodities, so the role of nature can be accounted for and invested in. With private investment, we can restore habitats and accelerate nature recovery across our landscapes.

Why do we sell BNG Units?

At RTA Restoration, we see Biodiversity Net Gain as a vehicle for funding our ecological restoration projects, enabling us to deliver positive and meaningful change to UK conservation and biodiversity.

Biodiversity Net Gain is a long-term, statutory framework designed to facilitate investment into conservation by developers. We also use this framework to support businesses in achieving their environmental and sustainability goals. Each unit of biodiversity we sell represents real, measurable improvements to local ecosystems, restoring natural habitats that support an abundance of biodiversity.

For more information, and to explore our available units, visit our Biodiversity Net Gain page, where you can learn more about our process and view the units we currently have available.

Our Core Principles

Restoring Natural Ecosystems: By managing the land to support native wildlife and facilitate natural ecological succession, we are restoring degraded landscapes to biodiverse ecosystems.

Research and Monitoring: We evaluate the effectiveness of our conservation efforts by tracking the biodiversity and natural capital changes, both temporally and spatially.

Growing the Conservation Industry: Through private investment, we aim to increase the scale of habitat restoration in the UK, as well as create greater career opportunities in the  conservation sector.

Reconnecting People to Nature: By restoring landscapes, we aim to promote understanding and awareness of how healthy ecosystems benefit society and combat wildlife loss.
